Totally Hackathon, Specifically for Health

International Center for Health Information Technology, Taipei Medical University with a close collaboration with MIT Sana Global Team, Boston, US, promotes an intensive integrative program designed to build local capacity and promote locally sustained innovation. Our complete program is deliberately structured to advance projects from idea to implementation.

The TMU-MIT (Sana) Hackathon is an intensive 3 days program to accelerate proficiency in global health informatics, to leverage international engineering resources and build mHealth capacity. The program is designed to introduce computer science and electrical engineers to mobile health technologies, while also exposing them to the clinical perspectives so they can more effectively design and implement mobile health solutions.

Hackathon

The participants are brought together with local clinicians to share ideas and innovate in an organized Hackathon, bringing theory into practice. The 3 days event allows engineers to immediately apply the concepts and lessons on actual projects, working in multidisciplinary teams to develop rapid prototypes and solve real problems. These projects then may be continued as research or startup ventures, while other students can benefit by continuing with more extensive health informatics training.

  4. Begin to understand the complexities of the clinical thought process and the factors that drive quality improvement

Theme : Ubiquitous Mobile Healthcare Experience

The needs for mobile medical healthcare has become more and more urgent. It is now the trend of utilizing hardware such as smart phones, tablets, and other mobile devices, combining with GPS , Bluetooth , 3G/4G communication technology to enhance traditional healthcare quality, reduce cost and improve management. Furthermore, with the application of IoT, internationals has put much emphasis on the the development of mobile healthcare to be able to explore the needs and the integration of the best solution.

Prof. Dr. Yu-Chuan (Jack) Li
Prof. Dr. Yu-Chuan (Jack)

Prof. Dr. Yu-Chuan (Jack) Li has been a pioneer of Medical Informatics research in Asia. He served as a Vice President of Taipei Medical University (TMU) (2009-2011) and currently, he has been the Dean of College of Medical science and Technology since 2011 and a professor of Graduate Institute of Biomedical Informatics since 1998. He obtain his M.D. from TMU in 1991 and his PhD in Medical Informatics from University of Utah in 1994. Due to his achievement in establishing EHR exchange models among hospitals and his dedication to IT applications in patient safety and care, he was awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the Year in 2001. His main areas of expertise are: Medical Decision Support Systems, Patient Safety Information Systems, and Medical Big Data Analytics.

Professor Terry B.J. Kuo

Professor Terry B.J. Kuo is a professor of Institute of Brain Science, National Yang- Ming University, Taipei, Taiwan. His research interest ranges from medical engineering, cardiovascular physiology and neurophysiology to sleep medicine. Prof. Kuo has also developed original techniques related brain science research including both hardware and software. Prof. Kuo has published more than 100 research articles, and patented more than 50 of his inventions. Prof. Kuo was the recipient of numerous awards in academic and research, including the 2004 Ten Outstanding Young Individuals in Taiwan. Prof. Kuo is also a key medical educator promoting clinician scientist training in Taiwan.

Dr. Shabbir Syed-Abdul

Dr. Shabbir Syed-Abdul, is an assistant professor of Health informatics at Graduate Institute of Biomedical Informatics, College of Medical Science and Technology, Taipei Medical University, Taiwan. He is a leading researcher and a principal investigator at the International Center for Health Information Technology, Taipei, Taiwan. He is educator for MOOCs on FutureLearn, one of his renowned course is on the role of Social Media in Healthcare: Opportunities and Challenges. Syed-Abdul is principle investigator of various Health IT projects like Biosensors, TrEHRT, PWAS, DzMap, Big data analytics and visualization. His research interests are Telemedicine, mHealth, Social media, Personal Health Records. He wants to focus on the management and flow of the medical information among healthcare providers and patients. He is focused on patient empowerment and engagement through social media. His research papers and viewpoints were published in prestigious journals like JAMIA, Journal of Medical Internet Research and The Lancet.

Leo Anthony Celi

Leo Anthony Celi has practiced medicine in three continents, giving him broad perspectives in healthcare delivery. His research is on secondary analysis of electronic health records and global health informatics. He founded and co-directs Sana at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also holds a faculty position at Harvard Medical School as an intensivist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and is the clinical research director for the Laboratory of Computational Physiology at MIT. Finally, he is one of the course directors for HST.936 at MIT – innovations in global health informatics and HST.956 – secondary analysis of electronic health records.

Alon Dagan

Alon Dagan is an Emergency Medicine Physician with a background in Biomedical Engineering. He is interested in developing pragmatic and innovative tools for addressing the complex problems facing health care in the developing world. In addition to working clinically, Alon is an Instructor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a MIT Research Affiliate. He joined the Sana team in 2016 and has been assisting in the design and implementation of international Hackathons, as well as providing a clinical perspective to technical projects addressing healthcare issues.

Eric Winkler

Eric Winkler (BS Physics, BS Computer Science, MIT Lecturer). Eric is the lead software developer of the open source Sana Mobile telemedicine platform. He has collaborated on mHealth research projects globally including locations in Argentina, Brazil, Haiti, India, and Lebanon.

Kenneth Eugene Paik

Dr. Kenneth Paik is a clinical informatician driving quality improvement and democratizing access through technology innovation, combining a multidisciplinary background in medicine, artificial intelligence, business management, and technology strategy. He is a research scientist at the MIT Laboratory for Computational Physiology investigating the secondary analysis of health data and building intelligent decision support system. As the co-director of Sana, he leads programs and project driving quality improvement and building capacity in health.

Wei-Hung Weng

Dr. Wei-Hung Weng is now a biomedical informatics research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. His research focuses on clinical decision support and knowledge discovery from unstructured data using large medical databases, natural language processing, ontology and machine learning approaches.

Prof. Dr. Chi-Ming Chu

Prof. Dr. Chi-Ming Chu is a professor of Health and Biomedical Informatics at School of Public Health, National Defense Medical Center, Taiwan. There are 4 majors in his recent researches such as Cardiac Force Index, Empower People of Health Information, Pooled Analysis for Microarray Data of Gene Expression Omnibus in Cancers, and Genome Sequencing Annotation via Witness-approaching Alignment. Johnson Huang

Johnson Huang is the CEO of CiiS Co., Ltd., the IT consultant of Pingtung Christian Hospital, and the secretary-general of HL7 Taiwan. He has the certification of International CDA Specialist and Medical Information Manager. He’s been devoted in the integration of cloud and mobile technology upon health related industry and has much experience on winning electronics information and healthcare information competitions. He had also been working in the world and dedicating on providing a total ehealth solution with limited resources.

Chung-Ho Hsieh M.D., Ph.D. (謝忠和)

Chung-Ho Hsieh M.D., Ph.D. (謝忠和) Chief Information Officer, Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital, Taipei City, Taiwan. Attending Physician, Department of General Surgery, Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital. Surgical Physician, Zhong-Xing Branch of Taipei City Hospital, Taiwan. Emergency Specialist Physician, Taiwan Society of Emergency Medicine, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Fu Jen Catholic University, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Has been an emergency physician, currently a surgeon and a CIO. Be interested with medical information, especially datamining and machine learning. Also be a teacher, like to interact with students.

Weily Jeng

Weily Jeng is a doctor of internal medicine and family medicine, he has been learning computer and medicine since 1982. In 1989, he got MD degree from School of Medicine, College of Medicine, China Medical University, Taiwan, and Programmer Certificate from Institute of Information for Industry (III).
In 1996, he and 21 healthcare professional (mostly doctors) created Healthland E-zine, wrote health articles voluntarily with peer review, sent through mailing list to readers freely. The number of healthcare professional and readers increased to 173 and more than 50,000 respectively https://goo.gl/Akrba4.
He created reporting system for Pathology Department and Laboratory Department of Cardinal Tien Hospital, and has been members in medicine information committee of Taiwan Associate of Family Medicine for 10 more years. www.tafm.org.tw. Richard Lu

Richard Lu (MD), Postdoctoral Fellow, Massachusetts General Hospital. I help edit papers, conduct retrospective cohort studies on large healthcare databases, and write software for mobile devices. I am interested in applied clinical informatics. I think that mobile health is the next big frontier for informatics, and I am exploring ways to use mobile technology to improve public health in Asia.

FAQs

Who is eligible for tmu-mit (sana) hackathon?

Any person with IT/Medical background with age above 18 is eligible to apply to TMU-MIT (SANA) HACKATHON.

Is the event free?

Every team will be charged 2000 NTD.

What are the rules?

Teams can consist of 1-4 people; we suggest team members consist cross-category expertise from different fields. And the entire project must be built at the event. You may use publicly available libraries, but besides that no lines of code should be written, and no seams should be sewn.

What are the categories?

Each team has to choose between a "Concept" or "Prototype/Beta version or Semi-product".

What should i bring to the hackathon?

Please bring an ID so we can verify and register you on-site! You'll also need to bring a computer/laptop, whatever software/hardware you feel might be necessary for development, we also recommend that you bring power strips for convenience. Feel free to also bring along a sleeping bag, and we recommend some comfortable clothes.

What should i present at the end?

Each team should present a poster and a prototype for review, and must be done before review. Extension or procrastination is not allowed and qualification will be cancelled once happens.

Will my travel be reimbursed?

Although we would love to have you, we won't be able to provide individual travel reimbursement this year.

Will there be free food?

Yes! We will provide catered meals during the event along with free caffeine!

Do i need to stay the entire time?

Nope, we are not a lock-in. We realize that 72 hours is a long time, and that some people might have other commitments during that time. Feel free to stay and leave as you choose.
